Surya Sen 'Jessica' [Skint]
Surya Sen is the alias and sonic concept of North London’s British-Bengali producer, DJ, and rapper Rana Ali. Named after the Bangladeshi revolutionary who led the armoury raid against the British Empire for independence in India.
Surya Sen’s effervescent and genre-defying sonic aesthetic fuses House, UK Garage and Hip Hop, and now with his debut EP in the works for the legendary imprint Skint Records, he readies his first single, ‘Jessica’. Inspired by early rave footage discovered during lockdown, Surya wrote “Jessica” as a statement and call to action for post-lockdown UK club culture to return to its roots of living in the moment. - “Instantly hypnotised by their dance moves and felt a feeling that I hadn't felt in so long. I knew I wanted to create something that could capture that feeling.”
Hi-hats as sharp as shrapnel cut through ‘Jessica’. Taking the track through glossy chord progressions and jacking basslines. Surya Sen’s effortless lyrical flow glides across the mix with unmatched eloquence, it’s hard not to picture the sun-soaked festival sound systems the UK is hoping for this summer and hazy low-ceiling rooms exuberantly swinging to the convulsive low-end frequencies.
With early support from BBC Asian Network, Jamz Supernova on BBC 1Xtra, BBC Introducing, 6Music, Beats1, Rinse FM, Reprezent, Worldwide FM, Surya Sen is primed as one of Skint’s most promising new signings and an exciting UK talent to watch.
